Welcome to girlsrugby.co.uk - the home of the Morpeth girls and ladies rugby teams.
Since the summer of 2001 Morpeth RFC has been actively developing rugby for girls between the ages of 12 and 18, and have now formed one of the North East’s most successful girls rugby teams. Girl’s rugby is not new to Morpeth as they have always encouraged young girls between the ages of 6 and 12 to play mixed gender tag and contact rugby within the clubs mini section. But owing to the lack of a girls section, players either moved club or worst still gave up their short careers.
Following a very successful ‘Active Sport’ sponsored Northumberland Youth Games at Berwick in September 2001, Rob Winter, our current team manager, coached the Castle Morpeth Girls Tag Team, and accumulated 15 players from the Castle Morpeth and Wansbeck regional squads to assemble the core of the girls playing at Morpeth RFC today.
Five seasons later the Morpeth U14 and U17 teams have accumulated a great deal of local and regional silverware, and have had numerous players representing Northumberland, the North East, and England U19 squads.
In September 2005 Morpeth Ladies took the field for the first time playing eleven friendly matches during the course of the season and winning nine.
For the 2006 / 07 season Morpeth Ladies will contest their rugby in North East League three, against local rivals Blaydon, Novo’s, Darlington, Leeds Leo’s and Doncaster.
